Hand held wooden brush, used for sweeping cotton dust from machines and floors in a textile mill.

The cotton dust, or 'fly', which accumulated on machines and floors in a textile mill was a fire hazard, so cleanliness was paramount. Brushes like these were used to sweep floors and clean between machine parts, sometimes whilst they were in motion. Before laws progressively banned work for children in Britain's cotton industry, the smallest child workers, nicknamed scavangers, carried out this work.
